Initial Impressions: Chaos Walking Trailer

I’ve been a fan of the Chaos Walking trilogy by Patrick Ness for almost a decade (see a backlist review of the series here). I discovered The Knife of Never Letting Go way back in 2011 when I first started book blogging and never looked back.

It’s been my go-to YA book recommendation for years. I particularly enjoy recommending it to those who turn their nose up at Young Adult books or write off the entire group of work simply because they’re written for teenagers. Yes, it is a good adventure series but it also explores some deep issues (civil war; terrorism; genocide) that could make for some really fascinating discussions.

Okay, okay. Enough of me yammering. Let’s get to the trailer.

My Thoughts

I hope it’s not done in the movie but I don’t like immediately showing there was a crash & there’s Violet. The world-building is so crucial. We’re introduced to this world that’s mostly similar to ours but the germ creates two big side effects: Noise & kills the Women. Being in this noisy world and stumbling across a pocket of perfect silence is supposed to trip Todd (and you, the reader) up. This feels like a spoiler (even though it does happen early-ish in the book).

[Every time I book talk The Knife of Never Letting Go, I introduce this world & the problems. I always, always stop when I say that Todd finds a pocket of perfect silence. Sure, you might be able to figure it out but SPOILERS. 🙄]

The visualization of Noise is…interesting. I was really hoping that with the technology of today we would get something visual (like in the book) and audio.

This is what Noise looks like in the books

The accents…not a fan. Maybe they grow on you?

I liked that we got a snippet of the Spackle.

Visually, it’s not what I’ve been imagining for years but that’s okay and to be expected.

I’m still excited. I am disappointed that I won’t be able to see this in theaters but look forward to streaming it.
