Favorite Books by the Month 2020

Time for a traditional best books of the year post! These are the best book I read in 2020. They weren’t necessarily published in 2020.

January

The Whisper Man by Alex North

So begins my adventure into Adult mysteries this year. I picked it up because the 9th Doctor (Christopher Eccleston) narrates it. Thankfully, it was also a great story.

The Vanishing Deep by Astrid Scholte

Astrid really knows how to pack a punch. So many great twists.

March

The Trials of Morrigan Crow by Jessica Townsend

Fun adventure series! Nice alternative for those looking for an HP substitute.

April

Lock Every Door by Riley Sager

My first Sager book! Definitely cured my lockdown book slump.

May

Magpie Murders by Anthony Horowitz

I love a story within in a story. The inner story is a bit like an Agatha Christie novel that ends abruptly forcing the editor reading the story to solve the mystery.

June

Archenemies by Marissa Meyer

No second book syndrome here. Thank goodness I got Supernova for Christmas.

July

Jurassic Park by Michael Crichton

If you only take one book recommendation from me this year, PLEASE let it be this one. SO freaking good. I enjoyed the original movie but this is SO much better. Also, listen to it as an audiobook.

August

Relic by Douglas Preston and Lincoln Child

Great blend of mystery and horror. I began working my way through the library’s selection of audiobooks on CDs of the series (sadly I had to skip some books; may come back to them at some point).

September

Sorcery of Thorns by Margaret Rogerson

It’s like this book was written just for me.

October

Small Spaces by Katherine Arden

Whatever, yes. This is a reread. Still love it.

November

The Inheritance Games by Jennifer Lynn Barnes

It’s like a YA version of Knives Out. I’ll have a review out at some point.

December

A Good Girl’s Guide to Murder by Holly Jackson

The hype was real for this one but it definitely lived up to it.

2020 was weird for SO many reasons. One of the ‘bright’ sides to the year was the built-in excuse to read more. I didn’t quite make the dent in my physical TBR pile like I was hoping I would. 2020 pushed me out of my comfort zone and helped me discover that I really enjoy non-YA fantasy/science fiction was well. Hopefully 2021 will be full of the books on my TBR and many more new authors & genres.
