In 1950, just three years after Jackie Robinson made history on the baseball field, the exclusive US Lawn Tennis Association reluctantly opened its doors to welcome Althea Gibson, a talented young Black woman from Harlem. However, her exceptional skill soon overshadowed any prejudice she faced, propelling her to become one of America’s greatest tennis champions.

With her upbringing in New York and training from tennis-playing doctors in the South, Gibson’s talent took her around the world. She repeatedly triumphed at prestigious tournaments like Wimbledon and Forest Hills. Along the way, she had the honor of meeting Queen Elizabeth II and receiving recognition on the covers of Sports Illustrated and Time, making her the first Black woman to achieve such milestones.

Not content with just conquering tennis, Gibson made history once again in 1964 by becoming the first Black woman to join the Ladies Professional Golf Association (LPGA).

In her book “Althea,” Sally H. Jacobs, a renowned Boston Globe reporter, shares the poignant story of this trailblazing pioneer.
