Allow me to express my pride in the creation of this article, titled “American Grown”. Its beauty far surpasses my expectations, especially in the captivating imagery. As my daughters, Malia and Sasha, picked it up, their immediate engagement with the pictures affirmed its mesmerizing allure. Gradually, they delved into the content, reading through the pages, and finally giving their enthusiastic approval. We aspire for this article to evoke the same response in readers.

“American Grown” not only narrates the story of the White House garden’s inception and its challenges but also encompasses the thriving community gardens all across the nation. From the fruitful community garden in Hawaii, Mao Farms, to the remarkable school gardens nestled in bustling New York City, the book encompasses inspiring tales of people’s endeavors across the country. Furthermore, it delves into one of my key initiatives, “Let’s Move,” which focuses on promoting healthy lifestyles for our children. The article shares enlightening statistics and showcases the ongoing efforts nationwide to ensure our children lead healthier lives.

Additionally, the article provides practical tips. Although not a gardening expert myself, I had the privilege of working with a dedicated team from the National Park Service and the Bancroft and Tubman kids, my steadfast partners in this endeavor. From the early stages of exploring the idea of a garden on the south lawn, it was clear that we needed a teaching garden that actively involved children. Understanding the origins of their food and actively participating in the cultivation process formed the foundation of my own personal journey. In Chicago, we frequented farmers’ markets, engaged the children in modifying their diets, and witnessed the transformative power of their active involvement. This same transformative power is palpable in the school children cultivating their own gardens. Their experiences are shared, and they bring forth ideas and questions to their families, instigating positive changes in eating habits.

These incredible children, who come to the White House without any trace of awe, immediately immerse themselves in their work, ensuring the garden is planted and harvested efficiently. Their dedication and contribution are indispensable, and I am immensely proud of their efforts. I express my deepest gratitude to them for their invaluable assistance.
