In this article, we’ll guide you through the entire process of transforming a ball of clay into a beautiful piece of pottery that you can use or even sell. The Pottery Process

Let’s start with the clay. There are countless types of clay available, but for this article, we’ll use a buff stoneware clay from common-law clay. However, feel free to explore other options and even use your own clay if you prefer. The first step is throwing, where you shape the clay on a wheel. People often wonder when to flip the pot over, and the answer is simple: as soon as possible, without distorting its shape. This ensures even drying, a crucial aspect of pottery. Once the pot is flipped, we can move on to trimming and attaching handles.

After that, the pottery needs to dry completely before the first firing, called the bisque firing. The piece should have no moisture left to avoid any issues during the firing process. Once it’s bone dry, it is ready to be loaded into the kiln for the bisque firing. This firing typically occurs at a lower temperature compared to the final glaze firing, usually between cone 04 and cone 06. The pottery comes out of the bisque firing with a pinkish or sometimes whiter color, depending on the clay body used.

At this stage, you can apply glaze to your pottery. Simply choose a glaze bucket and coat your piece. Afterward, it is time for the glaze firing, usually at a higher temperature. The result is a beautiful, finished piece of pottery that you can admire and use.
