Bonhoeffer: A Heroic Faith Against the Nazis
It is always a pleasure and an honor for me to sit down with an author after reading their book, to gain insights into their perspective. Such is the case with Eric Metaxas, whom I interviewed about his book “Everything You Wanted to Always Want to Know About God (But Were Afraid to Ask): The Jesus Edition.” Now, we are discussing his remarkable biography, “Bonhoeffer: Pastor, Martyr, Prophet, Spy.”
Dietrich Bonhoeffer, one of the most profound Christian thinkers of the 20th century, was a German pastor and theologian. He became involved in a plot against Adolf Hitler and the Nazi regime due to their staunch opposition to the church. Ultimately, Bonhoeffer was arrested, imprisoned, and ultimately hanged at the hands of the Nazis in April 1945, just before the end of World War II.
This inspiring story of courage and faith captivated me from the moment I first heard it. It is unfortunate that Bonhoeffer’s story is not widely known, particularly in a culture where the positive side of faith often goes unnoticed. Some have even attempted to downplay his Christian identity by labeling him as a humanist, which is absurd.
As someone of German heritage, this story holds special significance for me. To learn that a German man stood up to the Nazis due to his faith in Jesus was truly exhilarating. I never imagined that I would be writing a biography about Bonhoeffer, but the more I delved into his life, the more I realized the need to share his story in a way that would capture the attention of a wider audience.
Bonhoeffer is widely known for his book “The Cost of Discipleship,” which has changed the lives of countless readers. Additionally, he wrote “Life Together,” a reflection on Christian community, and “Ethics,” considered by many his greatest work. His intellectual prowess was unmatched, and his commitment to truth and his Christian faith made him a remarkable figure in a dark period of history.
Although he died at the age of 39, Bonhoeffer’s accomplishments as a pastor, academic, and witness for truth are extraordinary. His family, who valued learning and clear thinking, played a significant role in shaping his character and beliefs. Thus, understanding Bonhoeffer’s context, including the rise of the Nazis and his upbringing, is crucial to comprehending his story fully.
It is my hope that through this biographical account, more people will come to know and appreciate the legacy of Dietrich Bonhoeffer and the profound impact he had on the Christian witness in Nazi Germany. His story serves as a testament to the importance of standing up for truth, even in the darkest times.
