Breathing Under Water : Spirituality And The Twelve Steps by Richard Rohr

Breathing Under Water : Spirituality And The Twelve Steps by Richard Rohr

Do you ever feel like you’re hooked on something? Whether it’s a substance, a behavior, or even a mindset, addiction can manifest in various forms in our lives. However, according to Richard Rohr’s book, Breathing Under Water, there is hope for breaking free.

In this compelling read, Rohr introduces the idea that by acknowledging our addiction, accepting our flaws, and surrendering to a higher power, we can begin the journey towards healing not only ourselves but also our world.

What makes this book particularly insightful is Rohr’s emphasis on the Twelve Steps, commonly associated with overcoming substance abuse. Yet, he explores their applicability to any form of addiction, including the less visible but equally pervasive addiction to sin that we all share.

By diving deep into the Gospel principles underlying the Twelve Steps, Rohr offers a roadmap to liberation from addiction. Whether you struggle with a visible dependency like alcohol or drugs, or a more clandestine addiction that lurks within, his message is clear: there is a way out.

Notably, Breathing Under Water is available in audio format, making it easily accessible to those who prefer to listen rather than read. You can find the audio edition of this book on Audible, ready for download.

Rohr suggests that addiction is not limited to substance abuse, but rather, we are all addicted to our own way of thinking. He emphasizes the need for emotional sobriety and a vital spiritual experience to truly achieve recovery and transformation. He also discusses the importance of non-dual thinking, which involves seeing beyond our binary judgments and embracing the gray areas of life. Rohr brings together elements of psychology, theology, and science to offer a unique perspective on overcoming addiction and finding freedom.
