Loving Mountains, Loving Men : Memoirs Of A Gay Appalachian by Jeff Mann
In the second edition of the book, with a new afterword, Jeff Mann presents his journey as a gay man embracing his Appalachian heritage. While many LGBTQ+ individuals from the mountains feel compelled to seek acceptance in urban areas, Mann shares his story of leaving, then returning, and embracing both his regional and sexual identities.
Throughout the book, Mann eloquently recounts his upbringing in the small town of Hinton, located in southern West Virginia. He shares his coming to terms with his homosexuality, the challenges he faced due to homophobia, and the supportive community of lesbian friends he discovered. Seeking liberation, Mann’s initial attempts to find solace in urban gay communities are portrayed.
Mann explores his quest for romantic love, highlighting his resilient family who have provided unwavering support and encouragement to defy societal norms. He also confronts religious intolerance and the violence borne out of homophobia. Additionally, Mann expresses his deep affection for the folk culture of the Highland South.
Shaped by his mountain upbringing, Mann masterfully reconciles his sexuality with traditional notions of Appalachian manhood, while preserving his connection to home and family. “Loving Mountains, Loving Men” is a compelling and universal narrative, resonating with individuals striving for self-acceptance and harmony with the wider world.
