Bird Watching 101: Tips for Beginners

Trust us, we had a wonderful time at our recent webinar! We would like to thank everyone who joined us for this amazing event. Before we get started, we would like to take care of some housekeeping. Please turn off your cameras to avoid any distractions. Sean Dooley, our amazing guest, will be speaking during the session and we want everyone to concentrate on him. You will all be muted as well, not because we don’t want to hear from you, but because there are a lot of people in the session. If you have any questions, please use the chat function and I will do my best to answer them or pass them along to Sean.

First, I would like to acknowledge the traditional owners of the lands we are joining from tonight. I am calling in from durable country, where the weather has been wonderful. I want to pay my respects to the First Nations Elders past and present and extend that respect to any Aboriginal or Torres Strait Islander people who are joining us tonight.

Now, let’s talk about our amazing guest, Sean Dooley. Sean is our national public affairs manager at BirdLife Australia. He is not your average bird enthusiast – he is an absolute bird nerd! Sean is incredibly passionate about our feathered friends and his infectious enthusiasm is simply inspiring. He is also an author and has written for various publications. Sean’s extensive experience in bird watching makes him the go-to expert in the field.

Sean believes that bird identification is like learning a language. You don’t need to know every single bird species in one go, but rather, take it bird by bird. By familiarizing yourself with one bird, you can start recognizing the differences in other species. Sean encourages beginners to focus on the basic principles of bird identification rather than getting overwhelmed by the vast number of bird species out there.

When it comes to bird watching, Sean emphasizes the importance of observing habits, calls, and habitat use. These elements can play a crucial role in identifying birds, especially when it comes to migratory species. In Central Victoria, for example, you may see migratory birds like honeyeaters, cuckoos, and various other species.

As for the tools of the trade, Sean recommends using a good pair of binoculars and a reliable field guide or app. Brands like Nikon and Swarovski offer excellent binoculars, and the Australian bird guide by CSIRO is a comprehensive resource for identifying birds. Additionally, birding with experienced birders and participating in local bird watching activities can enhance your learning experience.

While Sean has seen a wide variety of Australian birds, there are a few elusive species he still hopes to encounter, such as the night parrot and the buff-breasted button quail. However, his birding journeys have taken him to incredible places and allowed him to witness rare species like the gray falcon.

Bird watching is a wonderful hobby that offers endless opportunities for discovering and appreciating the beauty of our avian friends. By taking it bird by bird and immersing yourself in the world of birds, you can embark on a lifelong journey of joy and learning.

We hope you found these insights from Sean helpful and motivating. Remember, birding is for everyone, regardless of experience level. So get out there, observe, and enjoy the wonders of the avian world!
