Martha Speaks : Teacher's Pet by Susan Meddaugh

This chapter book is based on the popular TV show Martha Speaks produced by PBS. It includes two engaging back-to-school stories, as well as a glossary and fun activities for children. In the first story, a student named T.D. unexpectedly includes Martha’s name on the substitute teacher list at Wagstaff Elementary. Little did he know that Martha, a remarkable talking dog, would actually step in as a substitute for Mrs. Clusky. Martha takes her duty seriously and starts teaching the class, much to the surprise of everyone, especially her friend Helen. However, Helen is unsure if their friendship can survive Martha’s strict teaching style.

The second story revolves around Alice, who finds herself in a challenging situation during her Spanish class. She is assigned an oral report, but there’s a problem – she can’t speak a word of Spanish. Fortunately, with the assistance of Tio Jorge’s Mexican alphabet soup, Martha comes to the rescue once again. Using her unique ability to speak different languages, Martha helps Alice with her homework. But is it considered cheating if a Spanish-speaking dog helps you with your assignments?

Martha Speaks: A Talking Dog Saves the Day

Hello, my reading friends! Welcome to Story Time. Have you ever wondered what it would be like if your pet could talk? Well, imagine if your pet started speaking and had a lot to say. That’s what happens in the article “Martha Speaks” by Susan Meadow.

The story begins when Helen gives her dog, Martha, a bowl of alphabet soup. Instead of the soup going to Martha’s stomach, it goes to her brain. And that’s when things get interesting.

Martha starts speaking and surprises her family with her newfound ability. They have a lot of questions for her, and she has a lot to say. Alphabet soup becomes a regular part of Martha’s diet, and her family enjoys some humorous experiences.

Martha talks to the delivery person, orders food over the phone, and even interacts with the television. She speaks her mind and tells the truth, sometimes causing embarrassment for her family.

But as Martha continues talking, her family realizes that her constant chatter can be overwhelming. They express their frustration and ask her to be quiet.

Martha is hurt by their response and decides to stop speaking altogether. Her family, initially enjoying the silence, soon becomes concerned about her sudden silence and takes her to the vet.

However, one night, when Martha hears a burglar breaking into the house, she springs into action. She calls 9-1-1, alerting the police to the crime. The burglar, impressed by Martha’s bravery, even offers her alphabet soup as a treat.

When Martha’s family returns home and learns what happened, they are grateful for her ability to speak. They appreciate that her talking saved the day. And from that day forward, Martha continues to speak, but she learns the importance of when to speak and when to stay silent.

Thank you so much for reading with me today. I hope you enjoyed the story. Stay tuned for more exciting adventures in our upcoming articles!
