Reckoning: Tennessee Writers on 2020

Hello everybody, welcome to our panel discussion. I am so glad to be here with you all today. We are here to celebrate and read from this book, “The Reckoning: Tennessee Writers on 2020.” The cover art is by Laura Baiston of Camp Nevernice, a Nashville-based printmaker.

We put together this anthology of writing around the year 2020 in response to a call for projects from the Tennessee Arts Commission. We received over 140 submissions and selected 33 pieces for the book. Each writer included in the book was paid, which was important to us as a way to support artists during a difficult year.

The book represents a wide range of voices and experiences from different areas of Tennessee. It includes creative non-fiction, poetry, and short stories. We wanted to ensure that the work represented a diverse perspective of the state, and we are proud of the selection.

During this panel, each of our contributors will read a piece from the book. We hope you enjoy hearing from them. I’d like to start by reading a few snippets from the introduction to give you a taste of what’s in store.

And so it begins, a collection of stories, reflections, and discussions that capture the essence of 2020 in Tennessee. From tornadoes to civil unrest to a pandemic, we have all faced challenges like never before. But amidst the chaos, we have found moments of joy, growth, and connection.

The writers included in this book share their perspectives on what it means to reckon with the events of 2020. They explore themes of grief, resilience, love, and hope. Through their words, we are reminded of the power of storytelling and the importance of coming together as a community.

As we navigate the uncertain road ahead, let this collection serve as a reminder of our strength and our ability to overcome adversity. Let us cherish the precious moments, embrace the cracks in our lives, and continue to write our own stories.

Thank you for joining us today. Now, let’s begin with our first reader, Nicholas Bush.
