Trailblazing Women in Entertainment | Changing the Narrative: From Stories to Social Justice

Good afternoon, I’m Anthea Hartig, the Elizabeth MacMillan Director of the National Museum of American History at the Smithsonian Institution. As we celebrate the last day of Women’s History Month, I want to welcome you to this program, “Trailblazing Women in Entertainment”. As the museum’s first woman director, it gives me great pleasure to host this conversation.

I’m here in Northern California on the traditional lands of Bayelone, and wherever you are, let us acknowledge and respect the native peoples who have allowed us to work and live on their territories. As we pause to acknowledge this moment of intersecting crises, including the ongoing COVID-19 pandemic and the racial, economic, and political challenges we face, I believe we can find hope in our hearts and in the promise of a better future.

At the National Museum of American History, our mission is to empower people to create a compassionate future by sharing the complexities of our past. Through our collections, we aim to reflect the diversity of our nation and examine the choices and actions that have shaped our world. One of our major exhibitions in the works is “Entertainment Nation”, which will explore the power of entertainment to shape our nation and bring about social change.

Today, we have three distinguished guests joining us who have made significant contributions to the world of entertainment. DJ Pritzker, the founder and CEO of Madison Wells, has produced projects in film, television, and theater. Abby Raven, Chairman Emeritus of A+E Networks, has been a pioneer in the cable industry and helped launch networks like the History Channel. Anna Deavere Smith, a playwright, actress, and professor, has used her art to explore social issues and bring attention to topics like inequality and the criminal justice system.

Now let’s dive into the conversation and hear from these incredible women about their experiences and insights in the world of entertainment.

First, we’ll hear from DJ Pritzker about her work at Madison Wells. She shares how her personal journey as a woman in a male-dominated industry has shaped her company’s mission to tell stories by and about badass women and people who push boundaries.

Abby Raven discusses her experience launching the History Channel and the importance of storytelling in the entertainment industry. She also shares her excitement about upcoming projects and the power of entertainment to educate and inspire.

Anna Deavere Smith talks about the importance of using theater to convene people and address social issues. She shares her approach to storytelling and her belief in the power of art to bring about change. She also discusses her upcoming projects and her focus on stories about girls and girlhood.

These three trailblazing women have made significant contributions to entertainment and continue to inspire with their work. Their experiences and insights offer valuable lessons and perspectives on the power of storytelling to shape our world.
