“The Gospel of Ruth: Exploring the Profound Theology of a Beautiful Love Story”

My name is Marianne Taylor, and I am a professor of Old Testament at Wycliffe College in Toronto. For many years, I have been teaching the book of Ruth, and when I was approached to write a commentary on Ruth for the Zondervan Story of God series, I eagerly accepted. The opportunity to delve deep into the book of Ruth and discover its treasures excited me.

As I researched the historical background of the book of Ruth, read commentaries by esteemed scholars, and studied the book with my fellow church members and students, I became increasingly convinced that we can view the book as the gospel of Ruth. It is a good news story that directs us to Jesus.

I am delighted that you have decided to join me in studying my favorite book in the Old Testament, the book of Ruth. This book, along with Esther, is one of the two Old Testament books named after a woman. Ruth is a concise book, consisting of only four chapters. Within these chapters, 55 out of 85 verses consist of conversations, which convey profound theology.

I encourage you to set aside 13 to 17 minutes to read or listen to the entire book of Ruth before each of our study sessions. By doing so, you will gain a deeper understanding of the text. Each time you engage with this short book, whether through different translations or various voices reading it, you will discover new insights.

The book of Ruth is often hailed as the most beautiful story in the Old Testament, as suggested by the renowned German poet and playwright Goethe. Some refer to it as a love story, while others describe it as a tale of three funerals and a wedding. While these descriptions capture elements of the book, they fall short of its full meaning.

By the end of our study together, I am confident that you will recognize the book of Ruth as more than a beautiful story or a love story. It is the gospel of Ruth, a narrative that ultimately leads us to Jesus.
