Strange & Spooky: Exploring Cleveland’s Haunted Past with Historic Ghost Tours

Do you believe that certain areas of Northeast Ohio may have supernatural activity? Cleveland investigative historian William Krachi, who has written his ninth book on this subject, is now utilizing his advanced technology to offer guided tours of some of Cleveland’s most eerie locations. There are numerous apparitions in Northeast Ohio, some which have been forgotten for over a century. News 5 investigator Joe Paganaka illustrates how Krachi combines significant components of Northeast Ohio’s history and folklore to educate and engage his audience. Krachi’s goal is to provide everyone with a sense of the spectral history that encompasses us.

Cleveland historian William Krachi has always had a fascination for the past and unexplained phenomena. He is now launching peculiar and spine-chilling tours in Cleveland, uncovering the rich history of Northeast Ohio. His aim is to both educate and excite his audience. Moreover, Krachi includes tales from Greater Cleveland’s peculiar and haunted past in his upcoming book, “Lost Ghost Stories of Cleveland,” which will be published in September.

Nevertheless, Krachi was once a skeptic when it came to restless spirits haunting Northeast Ohio. However, his perspective changed a few years ago when he accepted the challenge of living in Cleveland’s Franklin Castle, a Westside residence that was rumored to be occupied by ghosts. During his time there, Krachi went from being uncertain about ghostly activity to firmly believing in its existence. The encounters he experienced surprised him and solidified his belief.

Some of Krachi’s guided tours commence at the eerie Erie Street Cemetery on East 9th Street, across from Progressive Field. He tells the tale of the “colossal phantom,” a legendary figure who haunted the cemetery and Erie Street itself in 1861. This enigmatic figure, reportedly standing between 10 and 25 feet tall, struck fear into the hearts of Cleveland residents for two years.

Krachi enhances his haunted tours with a custom lantern equipped with a high-definition projector. This lantern displays ghostly images at each stop on the tour, corresponding to the location’s history. Krachi guides visitors to various places, such as the former site of the Cuyahoga County Jail, now known as 55 Public Square in Cleveland. Here, the restless spirits of three executed prisoners are said to haunt the jail. These apparitions consist of James Parks, Dr. John Hughes, and Alexander McConnell.

Krachi hopes that by sharing Northeast Ohio’s history, his tales of the unexplained, and the spectral images projected by his lantern, he can provide a unique and immersive glimpse into Cleveland’s haunted past. His intention is to revive forgotten history that remains imbued with ghostly stories. Reporting from the so-called haunted areas of downtown Cleveland, News 5 investigator Joe Paganakis delivers this spine-tingling account.

Krachi’s tours have already commenced, and he plans to expand them to other regions of Northeast Ohio, including Put-in-Bay, next year. For more information on booking a Haunted Adventure, visit News 5’s official website, cleveland.com.
